WOMAN IN THE NATION

Coming in 2025!

WOMAN IN THE NATION
From a world of steep canyons and streams, WOMAN IN THE NATION tells the unforgettable experiences of Teena Lockhart on the edge of the Black Hills.  She was Lakota, Moravian & French, an ordinary citizen in a test of will against government plans and power. She challenged the impossible and met the unexpected and extraordinary. She helped move forward, maintain and mend a more perfect Union.

The government should not try to take your home just because they want it or can.  Yet following the 1972 flood, when area clouds were seeded with salt & it rained 15 inches in 6 hours killing 238 people--that is exactly what happened.  Enter:  The sovereign woman, Teena Lockhart who fought to protect her home and family...and won!

About Us

Director Gemma Lockhart and Director of Photography Jigme Tenzing team up in this piercing documentary, together with Emmy Award winning producers Bruce Duthu & Tauna Lockhart to tell a story of one woman and her family, government agencies worked like a pack of wolves to take down.  This is a lonely story of  love, attempted taking & democracy in action.  Gemma is Colorado-based, producer of THE RIVER HOUSE, THE WAY HOME and the RED/WHITE DIALOGUE TV SERIES.  Director of Photography Jigme Tenzing is Bhutan-based, cinematographer of LUNANA, A YAK IN THE CLASSROOM, nominated in 2022 for best International Film at the Academy Awards.

Tiwahe is Lakota for the members of your family. It means we have a responsibility to protect each other, the environment and our home.

Teena Lockhart met the men of power as a sovereign woman. In 2021 the Independent Television Service, ITVS, made an open call for film concepts to address "a more perfect union." Gemma Lockhart submitted a film telling the story of her mother, Teena Lockhart. 157 films competed for the chance to receive one year of development funding and programmatic support. 44 films were forwarded to Industry professionals for review. 20 films were selected as documentaries important to our national story and with likelihood for success. This film was one.

Unarmed.  Without warning.  She had to fight for her family & home.

A film unspeakable in love, triumph and courage.
